### Elephant seal dive behaviour ### Data downloaded from https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.25029611.v4 on 2026-04-12 Green, David; Bestley, Sophie; McMahon, Clive; Lea, Mary-Anne; Harcourt, Robert; Guinet, Christophe; et al. (2024). Elephant seal dive behaviour responds consistently to changes in foraging success regardless of sex or ocean habitat. figshare. Dataset. https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.25029611.v4 ### Processing steps: 1. Download all data from https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.25029611.v4 2. Compile input/ElephantSeal_divebehaviour.csv from supplied R scripts 3. Run 02_process_csv.py from working directory * Creates individual seal tracks from 1-day positions and point layers for selected smoothing windows * Handles tracks crossing the dateline and reprojects outputs to EPSG:3031 * Outputs: - output/ElephantSeal_dive_tracks.shp = one track per individual - output/ElephantSeal_dive_behaviour_1d_pts.shp = 1-day smoothed dive behaviour and locations - output/ElephantSeal_dive_behaviour_7d_pts.shp = 7-day smoothed dive behaviour and locations 4. Run 03_trackseg_with_attributes.py from working directory * Creates line segments between successive 1-day locations for each individual * Assigns the starting observation's dive-behaviour attributes to each segment * Output: - output/ElephantSeal_dive_segments_1d.shp = 1-day track segments with associated dive-behaviour attributes
