### MODIS Images of Antarctic Ice Shelves ### Data downloaded from https://doi.org/10.5067/W87VCY3CW0MJ on 2026-01-30 Scambos, T., Bohlander, J., Wallin, B., Klinger, M., Fisher, M., Marowitz, R. & Hardman, M. A. (2022). Images of Antarctic Ice Shelves. (NSIDC-0102, Version 2). [Data Set]. Boulder, Colorado USA. NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center. https://doi.org/10.5067/W87VCY3CW0MJ ### Processing steps: ### Processing steps: 1. Edit earthdata_credentials.txt with Earthdata username and password * Required to authenticate downloads from NSIDC 2. Run 02_download_images.py from cwd * Download TIFF imagery from NSIDC Antarctic Ice Shelf Image Archive * Retain imagery from 10–31 January and all February, with optional configurable overall start and end dates * Exclude filenames containing _therm (i.e. MODIS only) * File source imagery by ice shelf under imagery//orig/ 3. Run 03_process_tifs.py from cwd * Recursively process imagery from imagery//orig/ * Reproject to EPSG:3031 on an aligned 250 m grid (bilinear resampling), convert to Int16, set NoData to -9999 * Build overviews and output COGs to imagery//int16_3031/ 4. Run 04_col_correct.py from cwd * Recursively apply adaptive percentile-based contrast stretching to imagery in imagery//int16_3031/ * Apply additional enhancement to low-dynamic-range images while avoiding extra brightening of already-bright scenes * Convert to Byte with NoData 0 and output COGs to imagery//colcorrect/ 5. EXTRA: Run 05_generate_mosaic_index.py from cwd * Generate an EPSG:3031 shapefile index of all imagery//colcorrect/ TIFFs for use with GeoServer ImageMosaic * Record the relative image path, ice shelf name and acquisition year, and write the index to imagery/imagery.shp
